Fire safety is something we all know about when it comes to the kitchen. But, what about the rest of your home? House fires can start in unlikely places, including the laundry room.

Learning how to clean a dryer vent is a great way to prevent fire hazards in the home. A report from the U.S. Fire Administration states that 31% of dryer fires from 2018 to 2020 resulted from a failure to clean the dryer vent. Moreover, around 2900 fires start each year in the States due to built-up lint in the ductwork.

Luckily, a little routine maintenance helps to prevent these disasters.

How Often Should You Clean Your Dryer Vent?

This depends on how often you use your dryer, but once every 3-6 months should help. Additionally, it’s important to clear out the lint filter after every use. This helps to increase airflow and efficiency in the dryer while preventing a buildup of lint.

Before You Start

The most common sign you need to clean your dryer vent is longer drying times. When your clothes require multiple runs, it’s time to check the vent. Additionally, you might notice a burning smell or extra lint in the lint trap.

Before you start, be sure to unplug the dryer and check for obstructions.

How to Clean a Dryer Vent from the Inside

1. Unplug and Move Your Dryer

  • If you have a gas-powered dryer, turn off the gas valve.
  • Carefully move the dryer away from the wall.
  • Disconnect the vent pipe from the back of the appliance. You may also need to remove a duct clamp.

2. Vacuum Out the Lint

  • Use the hose attachment of a vacuum to suck out the lint inside the vent tube opening on the back of the dryer.

3. Use a Pipe Brush to Clear Excess Lint

  • Check for lint on the sides and clear it with a lint brush.
  • Move the brush in a circular motion through the vent pipe, wall piping, and opening on the dryer. This will feel like cleaning a drain.

4. Reattach the Dryer

  • When the lint is clear, reattach the duct to the dryer.
  • Push the dryer back into place and plug it in.
  • Turn the gas valve on again.

That’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean a dryer vent from the inside. Now, let’s go over the outside.

How to Clean a Dryer Vent from the Outside

How to Clean a Dryer Vent from the Outside

1. Oil the Hinges of the Vent

  • While the dryer runs, check the exterior vent. Make sure it opens and closes.
  • If it doesn’t open properly, use a lubricant (WD-40 works) to oil the hinges.

2. Remove Lint & Any Debris

  • Check the slats for lint & debris.
  • Use a wire brush to clean off the slats.

3. Clean the Vent Cover

  • Clean the outer vent cover with a cloth, warm water, and dish soap.
  • Repeat until it is clear of dirt, soil, and dust.
  • Rinse with water.
  • Reattach the cover.

Tips for a Lasting Clean

  • Dryer sheets and wool dryer balls help to remove the static that attracts lint.
  • Clean off the lint trap after every load of laundry.
  • Regularly use the vacuum’s hose attachment to clean excess lint that gathers in the housing.
  • Scrub the filter every few months, especially if you use dryer sheets. Residue from these sheets can clog the pores in the filter. Clean the filter with hot water, soap, and a brush.

When Is It Time to Call a Professional?

If you aren’t able to clean the vent or notice your dryer acting funny, it’s time to call the pros. A professional dryer vent cleaning every 3-6 months can help improve the efficiency of your appliance.

Don’t leave your home at risk of a fire in the laundry room. Regular cleanings and maintenance can improve the safety of your home.
